San Anselmo is a charming community with a wide variety of homes with diverse architectural styles, on shady, tree-lined streets. The town of San Anselmo is made up primarily of smaller older homes than nearby Ross and Sleepy Hollow has larger ranch estates and horse properties.
San Anselmo real estate has become one of the favorite choices for Marin homebuyers. There are several communities with smaller homes and lots and others with larger ranch style homes on bigger lots. Depending on the location, the commute time to the city is approximately 25-30 minutes and the public transportation facilities are excellent providing feeder busses to the San Francisco ferry and direct bus service from every neighborhood. The town was mostly pastoral until 1875, when the North Pacific Railroad completed a line from Sausalito to Tomales, via San Anselmo. The town quickly became the “Hub” of much activity.
A beautiful stone castle overlooks San Anselmo. This castle is actually the San Francisco Theological Seminary, which was established in 1892 to train Presbyterian clergy. From the ivy covered chapel with its enchanting bells tolling the hours, to the turrets and towers, this beautiful facility has a delicate, fairy tale look to it.
The downtown area offers a variety of shops and restaurants. San Anselmo Avenue, the town’s main shopping area, is a curving boulevard of awning-shaded shops, cafes, galleries, restaurants, and boutiques. Sunset Magazine readers voted San Anselmo “Best in the West” for antiquing and the town is distinguished as the “Northern California Antique Capital”. Creek-side restaurants, cafes, galleries, antique shops, boutiques and a small winery contribute to downtown San Anselmo’s charming atmosphere. Self-guided walking tours of downtown area are available at Town Hall.
Some of San Anselmo’s many other attractions include the Robson-Harrington House and Park, the Carnegie Library and the American Legion Log Cabin. Annual events such as the Art and Wine Festival, Antiques Fair and town-wide antique sale, draw visitors from the surrounding communities and the entire San Francisco Bay Area.
Fairfax is rich in culture. From it’s bohemian liberal roots, this laid back town has a great small town atmosphere. From shopping to relaxed eateries to the charming 4-plex theater, Fairfax is a great community to raise a family. Many celebrities and rock stars have called Fairfax their home due to its wonderful setting in Marin.
During the summer months, Fairfax has a wonderful Wednesday Farmers Market, which brings families from all around Marin County. Fairfax is known for having great food as well as being one of the best towns to hear live music. Cascade falls and Deer Park are great communities within the quaint town of Fairfax.
Good Earth Natural Foods, first opened in the 60’s and has been known ever since for providing customers with organic and local farm-to-table food. Presently Good Earth has grown and expanded to a larger grocery store still suited for the health conscious family or the crunchy granola type. The store offers a juice bar, restaurant, salad and soup bar, food to go, a fireplace and seated dining as well.
Fairfax offers diverse architectural styles from small cottages to large modern homes; Fairfax offers a wide variety of architectural diversity.
From farmlands in Nicasio to playing golf at the San Geronimo Golf Course to biking in the rolling hills of west Marin, no wonder Fairfax is considered the gateway to west Marin. Also, Fairfax is a short drive to the beach communities of, Bolinas, Stinson, Muir Beach and Pt. Reyes.
